"Maison Smal L. DUJAT, Palais Royal 7 & 8" engraved on the lock plate, and the French control marks for finest French Sterling silver simply underscore the elegance of this 19th century traveler's chest. Surprisingly petit, really, it is large on traveler's necessities within. Dugat was supplier to the Emperor, Napoleon III (c.1850-70). All of the original jars, bottles, boxes remain along with an original inkwell, mirror and wood-handled brush. All have the same decorative monogram engraved as does the cartouche up top, "L M". The chest looks like rosewood to me - a beautiful grain enhanced by the heavy brass edging and lighter stringing. Complete with working lock and the original key, this one is really quite perfect, given an age of 150 years (give or take a decade). Full measurements noted on our photos.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. All of the original "L M" monogrammed and engraved lids remain with the set, one being an inkwell, leather-clad and pushbutton mechanism for safe travel. The hardwood and boar bristle brush is also original to the set as is the mirror which anchors inside the chest's lid and has it's own easel stand. Working lock, original key, and that signature lock plate - along with the French Minerve #1 guarantee punch mark on all silver, guaranteeing it is the finest quality in the world, .950/1000 pure silver. French silver is always heavier, more durable and less often dinged, bent, or damaged. The glass jars, boxes and 2 scent bottles are original with exception of 1 of the round jars, which is closely matched but not exact.  The sterling silver mounted comb and ornate brush have been added in by some previous owner and are just bonuses passing along to the next owner. I find no broken glass, chips nor cracks. I have marked one small veneer loss at bottom of side (XXX).  It's been cared for well.
