Beautifully carved mountain goat or chamois in a woodland setting, the tree hollowed out for the glass flute or 'epergne', vase. The Swiss carvers were true Animalier Masters, and the anatomy is superb on this one. Measurements noted on the photos. Likely a Grand Tour souvenir, or might have been one of a pair of matching epergnes to flank a carved clock with hunt scenes. We have just the one piece.
Very good to excellent for age and type, it has no damage at all to the glass insert vase, which is also wheel engraved. There are 2 chips on the wooden carving, one being part of one horn, and the other being one branch up top, each marked on our photos for your review. Dates c.1890-1910
