You know we bring you the very finest 1700s to early 1800s French Palais Royal sewing sets, necessaire - for decades now. This is an exceptionally fine one, all original and without damage. The light burl wood case or etui is stunning all on its own, and set with a mother of pearl and 18k gold shield cartouche that is yet to be monogrammed. Push-button opener and hinge work perfectly and open the case to reveal a stunning set of sewing tools, all in fine order, all 18k gold- trimmed mother of pearl. Not only are the usual scissors, thimble, needle case and bodkin (threading needle) there, but note the addition of 2 spools and the rare inclusion of a crochet tambour. The tambour alone typically sells for $300-500, and scissors in the $500 range in this fine a condition. The original silk pad remains, as does the mirror in interior lid. As if it's been treasured well these 200 years and not even used. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, no breaks in any of the mother of pearl implements, though a very fine hairline or 2 is seen on one side of thimble, likely a natural aging issue and not from having been dropped. The scissors remain very sharp, no damage or loss. 18k gold trims each item, including that extra large needle case. The crochet tambour or hook self-stores its own steel hook (see images). The silk velvet fitted interior and the silk satin pad remain in excellent condition. Mirror is unbroken, but I can see the attaching adhesive from back has caused some disruption of the mirror silver (see images). The brilliantly appealing wood case is superb and undamaged, no warp. Piano hinge, push-button opener each perfect and working beautifully. A very fine set, indeed!
