Fabulous large Victorian Era Needlework tapestry in English frame 29 1/2" x 26 1/8" is a portrait of 2 young girls playing together in an outdoor scene, a bouquet of flowers and a distant castle in view. Likely the work of a young girl, and perhaps even self-portrait of her with her servant companion who is putting flowers in her hair, works like this are often noted to have been by girls in the 9-12 year old ranges, sometimes even younger. Needle arts being the one, along with music, relegated to young society girls. The frame is walnut and has a gold filet outlining the needlework panel. There is not a cover glass and we will not add one ahead of shipping. One might wish to have one added - up to the next owner. Safer to ship without. Full measurements are noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, as you can see, the stitches are just elegantly worked, even, and in a truly beautiful palette of colors. The outer canvas is unfinished by intention, as was a popular way to do these in early Victorian era. I have shown a very small push/break to the linen canvas left of the flowering bush to the brunette girls left. Otherwise, no 'holes' or torn areas. No bug loss to the yarns or stitches. This one is a personal favorite and shows beautifully on the wall.
