A spectacular 19th century hand carved Black Forest gloves box (yes that was the original purpose to all the boxes carved in this elongated rectangular form, this size). The box is still just beautiful, and set as it is with that mirror which has been wheel engraved with a floral bouquet, along with the silk satin/velvet interior, one can be relatively certain it was first owned by a lady. Souvenir of someone's Grand Tour, or a gift brought home from same, this one would date c.1850-1890.
Very good to excellent condition, the carved branches and tendrils of delicately carved leaves make a wonderful border for the mirror top. It seems very likely a petal or two would be chipped over such a long time (about 170-150 years on this one), and I will let you look over our many large and clear photos to determine any. There are no cracks, no notable losses to point out. No warp, the pieces fit nicely and flat. There is a lock which appears to be a working lock, but we do not have a key to fit it at listing time. Should we be able to match one from our stash of antique keys, we'll annotate the listing (and raise the price a bit, too). Interior is the old original lining and presents very nicely, clean and not tattered. No odors. Box is almost 12" long, 5" front to back, and 4" tall when closed. Gorgeous old thing!
