A beautifully salvaged 18th century point de Saint Cyr needlepoint, fine petit point embroidery with a fabulous history. The needlework is very special - mid 1700s type of petit point specifically created by French King Louis's MIstress for her school for girls, and known still as Point de Saint-Cyr, carrying the name of the finishing school for girls of nobility. The wool and silk yarns are in a beautiful palette, and someone before me worked those supplemented with early 19th century coarser French needlepoint, visible mostly at base of the panel with woman. You see charming mythical animals, beautiful old dyes - the Point de Saint-Cyr is a personal favorite of mine. This beautiful panel is rectangular (some photos make it look off-rectangle), large and has been backed with fresh course linen to be used as a wall hanging, or wall art. One could, alternatively, make it up as a fabulous large decorator pillow. Full measurements noted on photos.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, the larger stitches date c.1830-50, but that focal point center with 2 figures is mid-1700s and it shows some of its age but has been beautifully saved and incorporated into the larger panel, complementing both. The excellent course linen backing has been folded to become a border, and it's been hung as wall art. No odors, beautiful colors, ready to hang.
