The frame is magnificent, a Napoleonic era Empire frame in extra large size, beautifully appliquéd corners which are all in fine form. The painting is the female half of a pair we bought in Paris, but we think the artist (unsigned) is likely Austrian or German. At least the paintings were set in place in Wiesbaden, Germany according to a framer's label on the backside of the man's portrait (sold separately). This painting of the beautiful young lady is offered on its own. I have searched for a signature and find none. I love that the artist's working sketch is attached on backside. So free and loose, it's got tremendous appeal to me. I might be tempted to turn her around and display the sketch in the frame. You'll decide. The painting is on a panel and does not appear to have any damage. I have not taken it apart to see if there are any signs of a signature on the edging. She's just a lovely portrait in 3/4 sidelong pose, and the frame carries the bulk of the value, I think.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. C. 1830s from fashion and frame, as well. You can see the wooden frame from backside to see how it is constructed and braced. There are some areas showing age, but the usual loss to the appliqués is not there to contend with. Shows beautifully. In France, the frame would likely be separated from its portrait and a mirror installed. I prefer paintings remain in their original frames. Measurements in full are noted on our images.
