Elegant antique French French gilt brass chamber stick, chamberstick or “bougeoir de voyage,” most likely dating from the mid-19th century, circa 1830–1860, with strong Romantic/Restoration-period decorative influence including hand engraved decoration, tarnished silver or blackened floral accents, coiled snakes and mother of pearl half-shell spent match(?) or vide poche ("empty pocket") in front! Perfect for the French Restoration to early Second Empire tastes. Earlier 18th century French chambersticks were usually more symmetrical and rococo while later Victorian examples tend to be heavier and more industrially made. The looping side elements are stylized snakes or serpents, a popular Romantic-era motif associated with eternity, wisdom, and exoticism with the mother of pearl inset adding luxury and iridescence. A truly beautiful and rare piece!
Very good to excellent condition. I see no damage to note. I didn't attempt to polish any of the tarnished/blackened areas to see if they'd shine back to a silver and will leave that decision to the buyer (I kind of really love the way it looks right now). See pictures for all measurments.
