Now and then we locate a wax seal or even a letter opener from one of these early 1800s French sets, but it's very rare to find a complete original set in the fitted presentation case (gilt embossed leather) and in such fine condition as the one we have brought you here. So it's a pleasure expanded. The set has hand enameled barrels or bodies to each of the 3 writer's tools and they are all in exceptionally fine condition. There is such an interesting mechanical way the pen tip opens and clamps closed to hold a nib (no nib with the box but we'll add one for shipment - easy to locate replacements). The leather etui or box, case, is the old original and each piece fits perfectly in the recessed fittings. This one also has two small compartments with enamel lids, likely for the wax wafers or stamps for sealing. There are hallmarks on the silver portions, the tiny French boar's head meaning that they're in at least .800 or finer silver content (80% pure silver or better by their standard). I did manage to photograph a tiny silversmith mark also and it appears to be for Nicias Bonnain, Paris circa 1845. The wax seal tip has a monogram of "CMD", I've shown in with the photo flipped horizontally as it would stamp. A fabulous & rare set, don't miss it!

Box and set are both in remarkably fine condition for age and type. There are a few small spots that appear to have enamel restorations and there are hairline cracks visible in the compartment lids but all, as you can see, are gorgeous. Foil backed kiln-fired enamel work is lovely, and typical of that which we find from artisans who worked in decorative arts in Bresse, Limoges and Sevres, France. The box is also in wonderfully preserved condition with just some surface wear and a few nips to the edges in places, it's also missing the hook portion of the right side clasp. Measurements are noted on the photos.
