Fabulous antique French Napoleon III or Victorian era 3 7/8” papier cache case with gilt embossed leather binding, bronze clasp, wire pique & mother of pearl inlay and holding the original sixth plate Daguerreotype photo of a young gentleman! Mostly purchased for the case, Dags have always been an interest but, coupled with this wonderful papier mache case, I really just couldn’t pass it by. In the shape of an old leather-bound book with leather binding, gold embossed decoration and “Bijou” title of sorts. The front and back covers in jet black papier mache, the front with brass strip inlays, a beautiful array of pique style metal wire vines, grapes & foliage and iridescent mother of pearl leaves here and there. The dag shows a seated young man with hands clasped in his lap, nothing overly rare or spectacular but, as I said, the case is really fantastic and in superb condition.
Very good to excellent condition. Definitely a dag, shiny silver finish and hard to see, I’m surprised I was able to get such a good photo of it given the tendency to just reflect anything and everything. Some slight scratches possible but not really any notable damage. See pictures for all measurements.
