Fine antique European c. 1870-1890s two-sided surveying, pocket or travel aneroid barometer & compass, likely from German speaking European manufacture with silvered or nickel plated exterior, original beveled glass or crystals on both sides and in wonderful condition! The combination of the relatively sophisticated aneroid mechanism, compact pocket-watch format, engraved/silvered dial, knurled adjustment fittings and substantial metal case is characteristic of the later 19th century. These were an extremely practical combination for a traveler, mountaineer, surveyor, military officer, explorer or gentleman traveler. The compass tells you direction, while the barometer gives information about weather change (falling pressure generally indicating deteriorating weather, elevation (atmospheric pressure decreases with altitude, so a calibrated aneroid can be used as a rough altimeter). That makes this much more than a novelty. It is essentially a pocket navigation/weather instrument. This one in great shape, age considered and a fabulous decorative accent for the mental adventurer.
Very good condition. Some scratching to the side of the case but, as noted, both beveled glass or crystals are intact with no cracks or chipping. Some tarnish or discoloration to the dials. We have not tested either function. See images for all measurements.
