This dramatic pair of French maritime engravings captures the power and danger of the sea through two celebrated nineteenth-century compositions. One illustrates the tragic wreck of the French vessel La Caravane during a violent storm on 21 September 1807, while the companion depicts sailors risking their own lives to rescue a drowning comrade surrounded by circling sharks. Both scenes embody the Romantic era's fascination with heroism, catastrophe, and man's struggle against the overwhelming forces of nature. Beautifully engraved with remarkable tonal depth, crashing waves, and expressive detail, these prints were issued in the octavo edition of La France Maritime, one of the most important illustrated French publications devoted to the nation's naval history and maritime exploits. 11" x 8.5" PAIR.

Originally intended for collectors and readers of maritime history, these engravings remain highly decorative today, equally at home in traditional, coastal, or library interiors. Their matching size, complementary subjects, and finely executed steel engraving make them an appealing pair for collectors of nautical art, nineteenth-century French prints, and historical marine imagery. Displayed together, they offer a compelling glimpse into the Romantic period's enduring fascination with the sea and the courage of those who sailed it.

Condition: Both prints remain in good antique condition with age-related toning, scattered foxing, and minor edge wear consistent with nearly two centuries of age. The lower sheet has a small corner loss and light edge imperfections that do not intrude into the engraved image. They present very well and would display beautifully after archival matting and framing.
