Exquisite! In a word, this set is simply magnificent. The quality of the shell you see here is matched only by the superb craftsmanship of the .950/1000 highest standard French sterling that accents it. The Art Deco feel to the engraved crystal jars is perfectly matched to the simplicity of the rich and elegant natural shell, but the set actually pre-dates the Art Deco period, so was quite visionary for its time and likely custom made for a gentleman. And there are 19 pieces to this splendid service. These would have originally been fitted to their own leather or perhaps crocodile/alligator leather valise, case. Called a 'Trousse de voyage', these magnificent sets were in use during the height of the Grand Tour era and well-fitted travelers seemed to vie for whose set was the most grand. Certainly what we see remaining here of this particular late-1800s set leaves us greatly impressed by the person who originally chose this one. Masculine in line, but perfect for a lady's dressing table top, as well. A superb find, and straight here to us from France. Glorious!
Very good to excellent on all pieces of this set but one. There is an old repaired (glued) break to the small round patch or rouge pot of the set, as you see in our images. Nothing else is damaged, and only the slightest marks of use can be found in manicure items and brushes. The boar bristle brushes are complete, remarkable for their age. A wonderful set!
