It's a small shelf, yes, just 6" wide and tall, but so elegant for just that perfect spot - maybe for an antique crucifix, or a ceramic vase you love, a bronze work of art. You'll have the perfect way to use it. Elegantly made, I think it might be Dutch, made similarly to the old frames with carved detail and opulence of the shell veneers. I bought this at least a decade ago in Europe, sure I'd have a perfect place for it and it's just been in storage ever since. Time to let things go! Beautifully made, and in such fine condition. I need more houses, don't I - and lots more years ahead. Isn't it gorgeous!
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. There are no cracks, no breaks, no losses to the shaped veneers. A beautiful form, and opulent beyond all. I used to have a wonderful 18th century matching crucifix with stand. Long gone now, but this work reminds me of that one. I think it is mid-1800s, though it's possible it could be earlier or slightly later.
IMPORTANT NOTE regarding antique tortoise shell or ivory: We are great supporters of protection for endangered species in our modern world. We never buy or sell anything 100 years or newer; we donate to anti-poaching organizations; we don't hunt; we conserve in ways that impact global warming (we're totally solar at home), knowing those measures also protect the animals in the wild today. We also recognize the vast cultural history we preserve with our care and reverence for these antique objects, and agree with CITES that objects over 100 years of age have nothing whatsoever to do with species depletion in our current world.
Our offering exceeds the age limitation of "more than 100 years of age", and is well within the exemption for CITES regulation. If imported, met the CITES regulation. This item will be handled and shipped from our Utah business, and is not available for shipment internationally, nor within the USA to California, NY, Nevada, Hawaii, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington if it contains ivory, sorry.
