The wick being braided cotton at center (visible upon inspection) I lean toward this being a lamp used for bedside or desktop use, but this is also a quite similar style to the old 1700s wax jacks used with coiled sealing wax which would be burned and poured onto a folded document or envelope and then a seal impressed into the melted wax to leave a crest or monogram of sender as the 'seal' to the document for transfer, or as formal 'seal' to such things as titles, legal documents or even the old French and Italian Catholic reliquaries, lending an authority to the status and thereby some credential or affirmation of authenticity. This lamp or wax jack is excellently preserved, has been recently polished so you can see the brilliance of the silver plating. Unfortunately, there are no maker's hallmarks so we can't provide that information or narrow down its date but it's most likely early 1800s, possibly Georgian era. A superb piece for the collector.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVery good condition, age considered. There is some loss or wear to the silver plating in places and the top flared 'bobeche' is slightly bent. There is also a rectangular fixture on one side (opposite the finger ring that holds the wax), possibly where a snuffer would have been attached with a small chain?
