A stunning and expanded c.1810 French Empire sewing box, coffers, "necessaire", both the box and the sewing tools are true works of art! Amazing preservation of these original tools, both sets of scissors and all but 2 spools still with the opulent burl sarcophagus-shaped chest. The set includes a perfume bottle with 18k cap, and 18k gold trimmed tools. The scissors and needle case are remarkably fine, roosters carved into the handles of the larger pair of scissors, and florals there and on the large pristine needle case. Bodkin has a shell motif, and all of thee pieces are exceptionally fine, in total. Add all of that opulent cut steel pique work on the casket and you can probably see why I'm over-the-moon with this museum quality set. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. I can point out 2 imperfections among the many delicate mother of pearl sewing and crochet items: thimble has faint hairline (see images) and there is an old restoration on the handle of the crochet tambour (also highlighted on photos for your review). I find nothing at all else to report. Shy of original by just 2 small spools which would have been in mother of pearl (these can be found occasionally to complete set). Oh, there is one very fine crochet hook inside the tambour, as well. So beautiful. The burl is stunning on this one. The old original mirror remains inside, though it has the typical age to the silvering. Rare to have it unbroken, however. All chenille trim and the silk pad are complete. While there is a working lock, the box does not have a key at listing time. We will make effort to match one from our spare antique keys stash, but it is listed without. Lift-out tray and entire interior is remarkably clean and fine. Raised on steel bun feet, papered bottom - over 200 years old. Napoleonic era.
