In an oyster-style heavy locket pendant, there is hair worked in an interesting way. There're 4 flattened plaitingis in a crossover pattern, set under heavy polished cover glass. The front panel is also heavy glass and covers a magnificent hand painted portrait of a gentleman with long lace collar. A clergyman perhaps or a councilor, attorney, scholar. The painting is so remarkable considering the small size of it. Look at the fine detail. All the personality it shows, along with the 5-o'clock shadow and the slightly bulging eyes that might indicate a thyroid problem. Thick graying hair wig - I do think he is one of the finest miniature paintings ever. The frame is substantially made, solid 14k gold or perhaps 15k (I have acid for 14k but not for 15k). Large at 2.5" without the bale added in. A full 19.05 grams, though that does include the glass, as well. Deep oyster shaped, it's 3/8" thick.
Very good to excellent condition, I see no flaws to note. We have not opened it to see if there might be a signature, but none is visible on the rim of painting that is visible. Fabulous piece, just purchased recently while in England.
