A truly fabulous mid to late-1700s shagreen spectacles case, etui, still with the original folding specs inside. The case is larger shagreen - hard to know for certain if this one is scales of the stingray or of shark. Typically the shark shagreen is darker and dyed black rather than green. And typically very fine scale shagreen is slightly earlier and definitely easy to be certain is belly leather from the stingray. That said, this one has stood the test of time, no losses to it and still just beautiful. So fun in display atop a stack of your leather bound antique books at tabletop or bedside. One could certainly use the case for your own readers, but definitely keep the original spectacles for future value.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The pair of glasses have a light magnification, I don't have any idea if I could guess it right - perhaps a +1 to +2 reader. It might be that frame is sterling silver, but old and shows a little corrosion. I have others, same era, definitely sterling silver and still are gorgeous, so I tend to think this set of frames might have some steel, or might be nickel silver. Both lenses are intact.
