Wonderful & rare antique 19th century French Dieppe? carved continental ivory crucified Christ sculpture, figure or corpus with very fine detail, ivory "INRI" scroll or plaque and displayed on the original 11.5" solid mahogany(?) cross! Another remarkable work, it seems we sell these faster than we can find them anymore and this one is beautiful! Nice large sized figure at 5 5/8" from head to toe and a 4 1/8" arm span. The detail is exquisite, look at the expression of pathos, the muscle definition and the separated fingers & loin cloth! Amazing! Displayed on a roughly 1/2" thick solid antique mahogany cross with brass strip inlays, a truly magnificent work of art and like those on display in the Louvre & Notre Dame! Ready for your showcase!
Very good condition! Visible age splitting to the solid ivory visible, a few fingers are missing, mostly left hand, and the toes have seen better days (all shown in the images). It appears that there may be a restoration to the tip of the figure's nose, the color not quite a perfect match and we haven't tested to see if it's an ivory repair. The mahogany cross is original with beautiful wood grain, no missing brass inlay and the INRI plaque is intact and pristine.. See pictures for measurements.
