Found in France, I'm told he is c.1790, French National Guard, Napoleon troops, French Revolution era. I'm intrigued by his expressive eyes and thick brows, and of course by the uniform. It seems there is an insignia on the shoulder epaulette. A gorgeous miniature painting with all that expression in a face just 1/2" from chin to hairline. In a typical French wooden frame typical of the era. Military portrait miniatures are always considered rare. One can't know if this young man ever made it home. History tells us artists set up by the ships, often having already painted various poses of uniforms, and could quickly add the soldier's likeness in a short period of time. This one has a certain feel of that habit. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good condition for age and type, over 200 years since it was painted, it is not perfect. A convex cover glass has protected the painting well, but it isn't perfect - I've taken it out of frame so you can review it in greatly enlarged view. It shows well. The frame shows age, of course. Slightly awkward resetting of image and mount into the wood frame, some tabs missing.
