I've heard people comment this type of old French stool is a child's rocking chair, but in fact this style of French upholstered stool is used from a chair or sofa to raise and rest the legs, much as we do in more modern mechanical recliner chairs. Possibly from people mistaking the way they're used, many of this style have been broken with someone's weight trying to make a chair of it. It is a stool, a bench. And this one is beautiful! Lush thick padded upholstery with a 19th century Aubusson wool tapestry in florals, trimmed with a 1/2" antique French passementerie trim. The full measurements are noted on our photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, no breaks or weakened areas to the wooden stool construction and it is beautifully upholstered with 19th century French Aubusson, wool yarns, well preserved with only a very little pull (see a few white threads) to the warp into which the old yarns are woven. I can see a couple of spots needing your needle and thread, but overall, nothing serious at all - it has aged very gracefully. Remember, footstool, not chair.
