A charming small interior painting, mid-1800s and nicely preserved on the original canvas and stretcher. Four gentlemen at a table set with food, they're engrossed in the story being told by the Friar. Such a French scene, and while it's sadly unsigned, it's beautifully done and has almost a feel of an Edward Hopper (American artist). It will be perfect for a doll's house setting, or on shelf or wall grouping. Intimate at 10 1/2" x 7 3/8" outer measurement.
Very good condition for age and type, the old stretcher has the canvas tight, still. One very small 'push' to the lower center which shows up as a white spot on the brown of the tablecloth's draped front panel. Would be such a simple restoration if one chose to do it, but it's exactly as we've found it and we'll leave the decision to its next owner. Purchased in Paris. Measurements noted above and directly on our photos.
