While there are aspects about this splendid hand carved chest that will appeal to the Black Forest aesthetic and collector, it is a 19th century French carved cabinet. Recently found in France, it is a work of art and function. I'm torn on whether it is a "boite a' sels" (salt box) or if it might have originally been a smoker's cabinet. Interesting heavy bronze hinged handle up top suggests it was regularly moved and certainly that can apply to either intent for the box. Whether its future will find it in kitchen (Country French) or on a side table or shelf at the ready for pipe or cigar service will be up to the next owner.  Full measurements are noted on our photos.

Very good condition for age and type. Very intricate overall carving, to include the inner doors and drawer fronts so that it displays beautifully open or closed. Barley twist carved pillars at sides add interest, as does the fronton or top panel and raised base/legs. I can see there have been earlier breaks to carved legs and have shown those spots in detail. They are sturdy and solid as they've been repaired. The 2 deep drawers simply slide on shelves, no slider bars and can hold quite a bit. The original lock and working key remain with it. There is a little inner left door slide lock which anchors it ahead of the left door being closed and locked.  An interesting carved dangle-pull, almost like a wood tassel, is found on that right door (facing us) and it would appear there once was a matching one on the left door.  A superb box, cabinet, chest! Early to mid-1800s, possibly earlier.
