First image is how he looks. The other photos were taken after he was cleaned up and a light beeswax/citrus oil which we always do to feed the old wood - I apologize for the shiny surface. It is temporary and he will again have just the natural Black Forest survace. It takes a few days to soak in fully. HE IS: Just a stunning fine mid-1800s hand carved sculpture, Swiss Black Forest bear made into a hollowed tobacco or cigar caddy. Typically we find these around 9" tall, maybe 10. This big bull is 14" tall seated. My estimation with measuring him is that he would be a 19" tall carved bear if standing. Apart from one fang, he is also perfectly preserved. Glass eyes are brown glass with black pupils, very lifelike. Painted mouth. He is so beautiful as a fine Animalier anatomical study. Very smooth cut allows the head to open, hinge-back, and carved out body cavity into which some 19th century gentleman stored his tobacco. The bear's raised arm would hold a selection of pipes. The open stump is about 3" in diameter, fine for cigars or cheroot. For us, who do not smoke, he's been used with a miniature 7" Christmas wreath over that pipe arm, and lots of candy canes in the open stump, chocolate kisses stored inside. He's been at table with a wildflower bouquet in the stump (use a glass). You'll find the perfect way to display him all year round. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition throughout. I can report only one tiny flaw and that is one fang has broken off. You own't even notice it, the entire impact of this large carving will fill your senses! It is not signed, though certainly represents the work of a Master carver. Heavy old forest growth wood, all carved of a single log.
