Charming antique needlepoint embroidery sampler worked on linen canvas. Very likely a child’s needlework, and would date early to mid-Victorian era, so approximately c.1850s. The simple frame and the obvious age makes it such a charming devotional or depiction of the good shepherd and his dog. It’s a protective watchful subject, the kind typical for a child to work as she learned her stitches. In that time, needleworks were one of the few ‘arts’ open to young girls and a means of creativity and also storytelling. Very very few girls were taught the fine arts, painting and sculpture then. Likewise, not sent off to advanced education, or other arts; composing, designing, architecture, industry or business. Few paths were open to young girls. The girl who finished this appealing scene was likely young - not more than about 8, and would have been sewing already for a few years. I love these, and the inclusion of the dog is wonderful! Full measurements are noted on the photos, but it is 16.5” x 13.5” (frame), and is protected under glass.
Very good to excellent for age and type, age to the old canvas in form of some darkening which is quite typical - usually from being hung in sunlight. We haven’t opened this one, and it retains its original framing and sealed paper backing to prevent dust and bugs inside. No loss to the wool yarn stitches within. The frame is that typical of a child’s needlework, shows a bit of loss to the gold finish over a light plaster, and is a wood frame. Ready to hang, and suitable size for a shelf display, as well.
