Superb late 1700s to earliest 1800s French school girl's needlework sampler, eglomise glass mat and original frame, excellent condition throughout. The needlepoint is a super-fine petitpoint on linen canvas, perfectly preserved as you see it. The eglomise (back-painted glass) has a scratch-through and gilded signature and notation letting us know it is the work of Celine Beaumont, and that she was a young student at "L'Institution de Belle Second". These early samplers represent the silk/wool work that mostly comprised the education of most girls in it's time. Art, sewing, elegant scripting, perhaps. . . not so many subjects open to young ladies, but the comportment of a lady in all the feminine arts. Very large in this original frame with original enamel-painted original glass mat, the work is 15" x 11", so you can see how super-tiny those stitches really are. The outer frame (heavy old wood frame with gilt finish) is 24.75" x 22.75" and it's nearly 2" in depth. Ready to hang.

Very good to excellent condition. No flaws at all on the tightly stretched old needlework, and also none on the old original painted glass mat. The work is likely a drawing, watercolor by the girl, on the linen, and then stitched in silk and perhaps wool. Really no deteriorations visible, and certainly no holes nor tearing at all. Very fine panel of needlework. The original old frame, at or over 200 years old, is also nicely preserved with only minor loss which I've noted with "x" on our photos for your review. There is a little of that lift of tilting on the outer perimeter of the frame - flaking a little as in the section image, but not distracting. Front view of it is very nice. And yes, we'll take incredible care in prepping this fine old treasure for shipping to its next owner. Magnificent, isn't it!
