In the manner of the small intimate drawings, portraits of friends and family members of Ingres, David, followers of those monumental Napoleon era artists, this stunning portrait miniature is a pencil sketch that bears no artist's signature but is so beautifully done. From her fashion, c.1820-30s, Louis-Philippe, a bit after Napoleon's reign, but a young woman who has grown up in the shadow of that time. She remains in what was likely the original frame, certainly it dates to the same time. A French silk-clad dore bronze appliqué and frame with oval aperture - itself a valuable antique. I found her just like this in France. Captivating, elegant, and long protected beneath her cover glass. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, this frame and drawing would be approaching or at 200 years of age now. I half anticipated finding Ingres' signature on the 100% rag paper upon which the pencil sketch is done, but alas, no signature. Such a beauty, very well-preserved. No real foxing or any stains. Well kept in period frame which does show age. Wreath appliqués are not entirely complete and the silk shows age, while not tatters. Wouldn't she be fabulous on your wall or tabletop, or in a Bru or other antique doll's house as wall art!
