Remember, there are basically 2 types of antique portrait miniatures. Most important are those of individuals who sat for their portrait, one of a kind paintings in miniature. And more plentiful and created for Grand Tour, souvenir portraits in miniature of famous historical figures, often painted "après" or after famous paintings by other artists. Marie-Antoinette was, like Napoleon, subject of many many variations of such Grand Tour souvenirs, and this is one of those. Very nicely done, beautifully framed, and signed by the artist who has copied the original portrait of Marie-Antoinette by artist Vigee LeBrun. Notable here, also, this painting is by a woman, "Marguerite Martinet". Undated, but we know these were particularly popular in the Victorian era, and I would date it late Victorian. Fine quality for tourist fare, and in another fine antique, the bow top French frame. Measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition throughout. Painting is very accomplished, has a bit of a feel of the Impressionist, doesn't it? Signed by artist, the painting is without damage, housed beautifully under the original convex cover glass and in a fine 19th century French bow top frame. Easel back and hanging loop, you have your choice of display. As these souvenirs go, this is an exceptionally fine one.
