A fabulous and very early shagreen necessaire, French in origin, and missing only the tiny funnel inside. Complete with the original 2 perfume flasks, bottles, flacon, and the original small scissors, original note panels that are riveted and open similar to a fan - some original notes remain on the sheets. There is also the original old stylus used for writing. Missing only the small funnel that would have fitted into that raised post with small hole. And the old shagreen (which is the very fine belly scales of stingray, tanned as leather) is still in remarkably good shape for age. This is a late 1700s item. The caps on perfume flasks are sterling silver in the case of this one, with very old tiny marks for silversmith, etc. according to French control requirement. We have not been able to capture that well enough to decipher the silversmith. These are so rare to find!
Very good condition for age and type. The old shagreen shows age, but is complete and so shows very nicely. Good coloration, the finest scales on this one indicating very fine original quality. The flaws notable are the missing funnel, and that both stoppers are stuck at listing time. Usually I get Rick to loosen them, and we'll do our best. One is stuck in a collar that is also chipped, as you can see, so we'll leave that one alone rather than risk any additional loss. Again, these are so old, rarely in this good a condition. Both caps on perfume flasks (which are blown crystal) are sterling silver, have tiniest marks that we can't decipher. French. The old silk velvet interior is also in very nice condition for 250 or so years of age. Most of the nap remains soft and intact. The measurements are noted directly on our photos, but outer etui/case is 3" tall, 2.25" wide and 1" depth when fully closed.
