Purchased decades ago in England, this splendid c.1830-40s 13" x 10.5" oval case was made to hold 9 typical early Victorian portrait miniatures. Fitted within, I've shown you a few of mine placed in the fitted ovals inside so you can see it as example. The portrait miniatures are not included and, if for sale, can be purchased separately. I've had this in a large table vitrine, with other miniatures resting on the opened silk lined and padded sides of the hinged cover. Splendid effect. Time now for it to display someone else's collection, though. I've never seen another this large. I know it's rare. The easel build into the back recesses flat, and with proper mounting hooks, I'm sure it would be fabulous for wall hung display, as well. Show off your miniatures as they were displayed almost 200 years ago.
Very good condition for age and type. The exterior does show age, as you can see. We haven't ever 'improved' the old leather with leather creams nor polish. I'm sure it can be improved if you're so inclined.There is no warp to it, the hinged swing away cover doors operate perfectly and so do the 2 original clasps. Easel stand is strong and like new. The ribbon needs a quick reattach. I'll try to remember to do it. It's slightly oyster-shaped and at thickest, is 1.75" or so in depth. The silk velvet is wonderful, slight rubs visible in our photos. The stunning and fine silk satin that lines the doors is without flaw. Remember, the portrait miniatures are not included. Just the case. Rare old thing!
