Napoleon III Grand Tour souvenir, a solid carved elephant tusk ivory cross with cherub face, winged, and in superb condition apart from that it would have once had a round top hanging apparatus, which is no longer with it. Dating c.1850-70, it is solid and heavy, not one of the later hollow-carved and less valuable ones sometimes seen. The delicately carved putti or angel's face feels like a Dieppe piece to me, elegantly done and it's without any damage for all its time. Very good to excellent throughout, with a nod to the missing ring top it would have had and for which a hole remains (see images). The cross is 6" long and nearly 4" wide. Solid, not hollow. None of the thorns have been broken away, and the winged cherub is magnificent. You would perhaps find it with a pinback as a Victorian brooch and pay the same for just the little putti.
