Absolutely a c.1770s society woman in the time of ill-fated French King Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, this charming miniature might be either French or an English woman who, like many, had her portrait done while on Grand Tour in France. I found her in Paris decades ago, and she's stayed in my collection since. An elongated Anglican nose which seems to have caught the French artist's attention, and cascades of blond hair, tied up in the style of her time. Blue eyes and a low bodice white gown, she furrows her brow as if the artist is to be suspected of over-drawing her nose. I love this image! I wish we knew the artist.
Very good to excellent condition throughout. No loss nor damage to the thin wafer upon which she is painted. The 2.75" diameter oyster locket frame still in fine condition with both original convex cover glasses and a broad French plaiting of blond hair on the backside. The large 10k (acid tested) pendant-like frame is hinged and opens easily. Closes just as easily and suffers no loss or damage.
