The frame style and clothing suggest this gentleman might be English rather than French, though I do remember buying this one in France. A very handsome gentleman ranging from late Georgian to perhaps c.1825, from fashion and frame combining to help to date it. Larger 'miniature' than many, it is beautifully painted by an artist who did not leave a signature unless it is on the backside or interior. The backing is sealed, and while I prefer to open my miniatures both to see what information can be found inside, and to clean glass and photograph the little painting, I did not wish to open the sealed back. That means all photos have been taken through glass and will show some glare on various spots so look at all the photos to assure yourself the painting is very fine. Full measurements noted on photos, but his face is 1 1/8" from chin to hairline. Quite astounding detail in a painting so small.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. More than 200 years old, up to 250, he presents as an image which has been well-treasured, or stored away. The only flaw to note would be along the very left side of the wafer, lighter in color - do you see it? Would perhaps indicate storage on its side and a slight moisture weep to just the edge of the painting. Gouache on thin natural wafer. Very adept artist, indeed.
