This one would be about 120+ years old by now, as they were popular at turn of the 20th century, c.1900-1910. A basin of white metal, hanging or pendant bale up top, and 6" x 3 3/4" (plus bale), it could be hung or worn, really. Not a single tiny colored glass tesserae out of place or broken on this one, and in addition to some of Rome's most wonderful old churches, including St. Peter's Square, the Roman Coliseum is also pictured in mosaic. Floral, "ROMA" finish off the beautiful old keepsake. Full measurements are noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Bright white metal form with a basin into which artisans have, one by one, placed bits of colored glass to create the architectural scenes, there is not a single flaw to the mosaic work. Back of the white metal basin cross or crucifix form shows the bright silver color of the metal, while the top side or front does have a few bits of tarnish here or there. I did not polish the silver metal, but did clean each mosaic section. Brilliant palette makes Rome come alive in memory. I'll be back there in October. This antique crucifix would cost more than double in Rome - we have sold so many back to Italian antique dealers there and in Florence through the decades.
