A splendid early to mid-Victorian English Papier-mâché box in surprisingly fine condition, this one would have been a handkerchief box from the size. The outer measurement is 7.75" square, all those serpentine scalloped edges intact and not broken away. The box is about 3/8" thick (sidewalls) and interior compartment, so nicely preserved with its original silk lining, is 5 5/8" square. So pretty, and perfect now for jewelry or display. A monogram at center of that lid is L R. You can see In this box, more than most of the old ones, how the inlays of mother of pearl were painted, the pearl adding a shimmer to the surface and light. Some of the oil paint has been lost to the ages, but it's fun to have one that shows you how they all once looked (the painted flowers).
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Usually these old ones have a badly chipped rim, edge, or damage near the hinges. This one has none of that. The entire motion of the serpentine edging is intact on both the lid and the base, with only some very light surface roughness here or there, but no chips. Original working lock and even still has the key with it. The interior is especially nice on this one, as well. Clean and ready to receive your jewelry, or everyone's compliments.
