Georgian era, mid-late 1700s portrait miniature of a gentleman in blue double-breasted pea coat or overcoat, and I don't know enough about military uniforms but it has the feel of a Mariner's jacket. Look closely at this painting, at the style of the artist. Incredibly interesting brush strokes in the manner we would see in pen and ink or pencil sketch - cross hatching and straight strokes. The face strokes make me think of much later works by Van Gogh - all strokes.  Quite unique among all the portraits I've had over time. Sadly, this artist did not sign the work, and there is no ID attending the portrait. Very nicely preserved, however - measurements noted on the photos.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Nicely worked Gouache on wafer, a paper backing lightly attached at outer border. Both frame and ornamental top hardware are typical of the British 18th century paintings, and would be no later than about 1820 on the far end. Nicely preserved, I see no flaws to note, and will bring attention to the ram's head hanging hardware, which is also a bit rare to find.
