We have had and sold several 19th century French jardiniere from this same mold through the years. It was in use mid-Victorian, or Napoleon III era (c.1850-70s). But we have never had one with the elaborate raised platform as you see it here. Splendid with its dangling chain and metal tassel adornment, it is elevated both is aesthetic of the era and in appeal. Amazing that it still has the draped chain with metal pompoms, tassel. VERY Napoleon III.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. No chips, no hairlines, no cracks nor restorations. No loss to the hand painted exterior, and the interior remains a high-gloss kiln-fired white glaze. Hand painted florals and garden scenes surround it, a black bottom rim and top rim with generous gold band remain undamaged but for a spot where someone has put their pricing tag, pulling off the gold in that one spot (see images). We can touch that up, but we want you to see that it is there. It is the only flaw we can find on this one. The base is metal, brass I would think. The jardiniere has been drilled center bottom for the one bolt that attaches the metal stand. That would mean you can't plant directly into it (might leak) but you can put a liner or use a plastic sheath for the bottom half, plant it safely that way. Or just fill it with fruit or simply display it. Heavy, large at 11 3/4" x 7 1/2", the bowl, and overall with stand, it is 11 1/4" tall. Just beautiful!
