I have been a box collector for 40 years. The Napoleon III era French boxes are the most beautiful and varied, and were an exhibition of the skill of the cabinetry trade. This is one from that era and those artisans. Some are signed on the lock plate, "TAHAN" or "P. Sormani" or "Vervelle", "Giroux" - fabulous and famed makers and purveyors of elegance in 19th century Paris. Legends, all. This one does not have a signature plate, but it is certainly of the quality. It's a bit unusual to see Kingwood veneers also worked in a marquetry like this one is. And it's survived so beautifully. Obviously the best care. Boxes in this size, one thinks of gaming boxes, fitted interiors with gambling chips and place for decks of cards. This one has never been partitioned, and remains as elegant inside as it is out. It's on my box table for now. I've definitely hit the "catch and release" stage of my antique collecting. Perhaps it will be on your box table soon, or desk. Cigar presentation box? Stationery? Love letters? Family's treasured old photos? You'll find it's perfect purpose.
Very good to excellent condition throughout. Opulent brass pencil-edging, and the marquetry is just stunning against it. Original lock and key, and the top of the line (1800s) hardware, a brace for the hinged top to stay open but not fall back. Superb box to leave open to display any collection of 'smalls'.
