My photographer neglected to capture the English silver marks, but from memory, I think this one is a William Comyns blotter. The old Victorian to Edwardian folder is in very good condition for age and type, and comes forward as a wonderful folio in which to store writing paper, envelopes, your engraved cards and stationery. Originally, the blotter was a requisite for any fine desktop, and it would have had numerous sheets of blotting paper within. A letter or signed document would be pressed between the blotting papers to absorb the ink after writing, so as to avoid smearing. Today they are a bit rare to find and are wonderful for use on your own desktop as a writer's portfolio, or even to house loose art paper for drawing, etc., and would be cherished by anyone with an eye for very fine Victorian goods such as this. Perfect for a movie set, as well. Yes, our antiques have appeared in various movies and tv shows, even one of our favorites, "Boardwalk Empire". Such a fun business we are in!
Very good condition for age and type. The extra large shell panel is beautiful, mottled in cognac and chocolate and accented well with the repousee-worked sterling silver corners. I believe this one carries the marks of Wm. Comyns, a noted English silversmith of the period. The leather backing is as it appears to be, very good in condition and authentic, nicely preserved and supple. Interior is lined on the back side with a brown moire silk fabric that fares well for age and type. All in all, a fabulous piece! The measurements are 9" x 8" and varies in depth up to 1" with contents within.
