Not quite perfect, but perfectly thrilling French Revolutionary era portrait miniature of a man with his musket or is it a flintlock gun? I'm no expert there. His top hat is there and his look is both confrontational and resolute. One wonders what became of him. It seems with an 18k gold frame (2 halves, no cover or backside glass) would indicate he's a positioned or wealthy gentleman, c. 1770-80s. The outdoor setting is one we see in c.1750-70s French portraits as well. Full measurements noted on photos, but that is a 3.5" diameter 18k gold (acid tested) mount.
Good condition for age and type, although it has imperfections it is rare enough to overcome those in value and significance. The painting wafer does have a split down the center, and the oyster-type 18k gold locket frame no longer has either convex cover glass and thus the gold has pushes to it. Certainly a painting worthy of its gold. Otherwise, well preserved. Spectacular theme and age.
