A most unusual 16" long French box, dating c.1850-70 (Napoleon III era), either a commissioned box to hold a deed or large document, rolled) or perhaps a very large fan box. A size we really just never see. Typically, a 12-13" long box from this era (gloves box) is the longest. This is in fine chevron parquet of kingwood, and has an engraved brass cartouche up top, brass pencil edging border trim, all finest quality accents.
Very good to excellent condition throughout, for age and type. We have no key for the working lock at listing time, however. Weâll do our best to try to match one of the old ones we have to fit it, but at listing, there is not a key. If one is found, weâll annotate our listing, and also our price. The kingwood is in beautiful condition, a nice satin finish that is original. The interior on this one is atypically pristine. The old original silk satin is in such fine condition. A couple of very small nips to the kingwood veneer are shown in our images, and have had restoration fill, will not show as chips for delivery. An exceptionally fine table box!
