Far larger than most c.1810-20 portrait miniatures, this gentleman's elegant portrait is 3 1/2" in diameter, and his handsome face is 1 1/2" from chin to hairline. The painting is ID'd as "Mr. Thomas Flack (1778-1844) and would have been painted in his adult youth, c.1805-15, amid Napoleon's Empire. His name is not French, but his artist was. Notations on back are French. Perhaps a young consulate or dignitary. I found this painting in Germany. The painting is magnificent in all aspects yet is unsigned by the very capable artist. Very good to excellent condition for age and type, more than 200 years old, the painting is excellent, perfectly protected under the original convex cover glass in bronze mat, but the original frame has suffered a break at some point in time, and shows the repair (noted for your review, from most obvious angle). Perhaps he's one to be kept without his frame, though the ID is on frame back. I believe the repair could be improved rather easily, but we'll leave that to his next home and owner.
