In the 19th century, souvenir or tourist trade miniature paintings, portraits were created, as you see in this one. Yes, a hand painted portrait, superb face and of an 18th century gentleman in costume of his time, French Revolutionary to Napoleon I era, but it is not that old. Most likely Napoleon III, Victorian Era (c.1837-1880s). Beautiful desktop box for any collector. Full measurements noted on photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Convex cover glass has protected the painting perfectly, and the box is beautifully crafted, appears to have been displayed or cased and never used for snuff, or possibly powder in this larger size. Very slightest minuscule chips, more an occasional rough spot on the sharp rims in the scalloped box, but nothing that rises to a 'chip'. Beautiful in form.
