A tall hand carved bear at 6" and a charming c.1888 thermometer stand with carved dedication and also date and St. Moritz (Switzerland). A gift as noted in the dedication (see images), it was likely a Grand Tour souvenir to begin with. We've had a few of these in smaller size recently, but this is a nice big one. The bear with stand is 8.5" tall, just the bear: 6" tall. Excellent anatomical representation, he's got glass eyes and loads of charm.
Very good condition for age and type. Ears are undamaged, nothing wrong with his snout or feet. Base carving takes advantage of a natural age crack in the log from which it's carved, and you can see the carver worked it into the composition, not as a flaw. But, equal to it, further up on the carving, you can see the wood shrunk a little further and causes a slight separation at his wrist in front of the log upon which a thermometer is mounted. Along the same age line in the old wood you can see a trace of hairline at his shoulder. Neither of those are breaks; just the natural shrinkage line the carver had worked with as he carved the base. Wonderful bear! The thermometer is not the original, but it is a very old one and is working. We'll keep trying to locate an accurate replacement, and will list him all over again if we find one perfect for him.
