She was born in Hamburg in 1811, and she died in 1889, this stylish woman. Her name is there, but I am not certain I'm making it out correctly. If you can help with the translation, please do email us. The panel was lightly sealed to the backing of this French c.1835-40 portrait, and her original convex cover glass was so dirty, one could barely see her. Some effort and care and now she is not only identified, but perfectly visible. The painting is excellent, not a bit of damage, which I remember worrying about when I bought her based on the visibility through that cover glass. But just look! She has the tri-parted hair and bottle curls and large-sleeved gown of her time (c.1835-40). High fashion, indeed, and set off with a beautiful garnet necklace. The addition of the hand knitted or crocheted boa is unique. In her time these small long boas were popular, but we mostly see them in fur. So interesting - might have been a special and treasured gift. She has likely had this portrait done as a Grand Tour souvenir. What little we can learn from her history awaits whomever can translate the back.

Very good to excellent condition throughout, with the added pleasure of identification and birth and death dates so one can research her if desired. Measurements are noted on the photos. A nice larger painting in gouache on wafer. Wood frame is in very nice condition for the age, as well.
