Dating c.1770-1800 European portrait miniature of a distinguished gentleman in a very obvious powdered wig. The 18k gold locket style frame forms an oyster shape with the deep convex glass both front and back, with backside holding an interesting plaiting of hair in light chestnut. Not likely it is his actual hair, but very likely it was from his lover or perhaps a favorite child - no gray to it and his age would suggest it is not his hair and not that of a wife. His face is just exceptional in artistry, yet I am unable to see a signature on the visible painting. I have not taken him out of the locket, not wanting to take a chance of disrupting the hair.

Very good to excellent condition, no breaks or flaws on either of the old convex glass, no losses to the painting, itself, and no dents to speak of or damage to the beautifully crafted 18k gold mount. Measurements noted on the photos for your review. I find no gold mark on the visible mount, but it does test and confirm at 18k. I am uncertain if the painting's national origin, either. I found this one in present day Germany.
