An exquisite example of 200 year old silk embroidery samplers, this one is a mourning devotional and mourns the loss of "Sacred to the Memory of Musgrave Brown, Died June 11, 1808, aged 40 years" sewn on the silk tomb. The chenille stitches, long stitches and super-fine embroidery in silk is more than 200 years old and has very little damage. You can see our images show there is a line of broken silk, fully visible but well contained within the frame and under glass to protect it for another 200 years.
Very good condition for age and type. The silk panel has been matted and framed in a very nice antique frame that might well have been its original. I suspect it once has a back-painted "eglomise" mat, black with a line of gold, which would have been the most likely mount for this type of work. The nice old burled wood frame is a contemporary to the needlework. Outer measurement: 18.25" x 15.25" and 1.25" thick. The silk embroidery panel showing 9.75" x 7.25". Super fine work.
