Fine antique French Napoleon III to Belle Epoque era Grand Tour style souvenir ormolu & thick beveled glass jewel casket with eglomise or reverse painted scene of Dieppe, France! We've had many of these over the years, all with souvenir or religious scenes. This one, if I'm remembering correctly, the first for Dieppe and shows the Casino de Dieppe. The casino of 1857 with its vaults and glass roofs was in the tradition of the great glass palaces of international exhibitions, as the Chrystal Palace in London. Bathing was in vogue and enjoyed a boom with the arrival of the railroad in 1848 at Dieppe. The Moorish style casino of the Belle Epoque opened on June 15th, 1886. A fishing port in Northern France, a spot known for it's amazing carvings from the Victorian era and earlier.
Very good condition. I see no loss to the reverse painted scene on the lid. Some age tarnish to the brass or ormolu framework and the tufted silk inner base lining is quite tattered. See pictures for measurements.
