Jean Le Bon, Roi De France" and "Henri II, Roi De France", Kings of France in bas relief sculptures made mid-1800s of gutta percha, one of the very early moldable materials, pre-plastics. They must have been part of a full series of the Kings of France. John II, called John the Good, (Jean La Bon) was King of France from 1350 until his death in 1364. When he came to power, France faced several disasters: the Black Death, which killed nearly 40% of its population. Henry II was King of France from 31 March 1547 until his death in 1559. The second son of Francis I, he became Dauphin of France upon the death of his elder brother Francis III, Duke of Brittany, in 1536. The wood-framed medallions are each detailed and fine likenesses of the Kings, based on paintings of them done in their lifetimes. An interesting pair! Full measurements are noted on photos. You are buying the pair, which date c.1850s.
Very good to excellent condition throughout, age and type considered. No breaks, no flaws notable. The medallions are set into a recess in the lathe-turned wooden frames, and can probably be pushed free of the frame through the hole in backside, but I don't think I would try. A fine pair, would be fabulous hung in a doll's house. I found them in France, of course.
