A petit and charming memento lock of hair, perfectly preserved in a frame with easel back which is unusual. Yes, it also has a hanging loop and the easel recesses so the backside is flat for your wall display, collection. Just 4" x 3 3/8" but deep at 1 1/8", it's one you might want to display along with portrait miniatures and small artworks. Hair art was a French industry, and this one was done or sold through Lemonnier, 10 Bvd. Italiens, Paris, a little boutique in the Passages. A substantial lock, chestnut brunette with a few gray strands, so not a child but likely a young adult. So many young women died in childbirth, I tend to think of that with this one. So treasured.
Very good to excellent condition throughout, age and type considered. Nicely preserved and nothing really floating. The outer frame is wood with a deep night sky blue silk velvet covering which has fared very well. A silver metal frame mat and deep convex cover glass, all in fine form. I'd say this one is late 1800s.
